Taalam Acey: Our featured guest speaker at Say The Word 2009, Taalam was dynamic, funny, deep and always riveting. His spoken word performances are tours-de-force of the art form. On this page, for now, is some YouTube stuff with him on it, plus links to his website & blog in case you didn't get a chance to get his book directly from him, like me. With an autograph and "Thanks for inviting me here. I really enjoyed this!" Taalam is really devoted to promoting literacy through spoken word; he, in fact, paid for his own plane ticket from Baltimore just to be a part of Say The Word. And in talking to him, he really cares about his work and sees it as a positive social force.
Wanda Coleman: Hugely famous poet who was the featured guest speaker at Say The Word 2008. This page has a few pictures, reviews of her work, and some links to stuff she has online. Plus, a few notes on the writing tips she gave me.
Danny Boy Herrera: Guest Speaker on campus February 26, 2009; here is an excerpt from his novel, Mi Revolucion, and links to his home page; (forthcoming) we will have some pictures from the event as well as video of LASC students reading excerpts from his work and the discussion that followed.
Michael McCarty: Michael visited a Creative Writing Class and the Cox Library Art Gallery on March 17, 2009, and shared many funny, insightful, deep, and personal stories with us. A former Black Panther, Michael has been profiled and had his life ruined by the FBI (Yeah, you missed that story!), but now makes a living traveling around the world and telling stories in the griot tradition, keeping the oral tradition of storytelling alive. On this page, there's a You Tube video of one of the stories he told the Creative Writing class, and links to his page and a storyteller network. I had no freaking idea storytelling was such a popular art form. We need a storytelling group on campus. Who's down for that?
Video Poetry: A few You Tube videos and some audio excerpts that we thought were interesting: William Burroughs (one of my favorite authors) discusses writing; Bridget Gray (A righteous Spoken Word piece called "My Letter to Hip Hop"); Adriane Harjo & Rose Solari reading their stuff; more to come.

Poetry Slam 2008: (forthcoming) This video of the 2008 Say the Word Poetry Slam was filmed and edited by C. Buggage. Thank her when you see her. Our students performances were spectacular: check it out.
